Maintaining shoes

If you have a collection of shoes then you will need the correct cleaning solutions and protectors to keep them in tip top condition.

When you buy your shoes ask the shop for the correct cleaning agent for your new shoes.  If you are ordering from an online store they will have a section devoted to products especially for cleaning and protecting your shoes.  If you can't see what you are looking for or are confused about what to buy then drop them an email to ask what the best product will be for your specific pair of shoes.  Most shoe stores are willing to help with enquiries.

Clean the shoes first.  Nubuck, leather and suede shoes will need a leather cleaner.  Leather cleaners come in a range of creams, lotions and liquids.  Choose the cleanser you find the easiest to work with and stick to it.  A runny liquid shoe cleaner is messier than a solid cream, but maybe easier to apply.  Follow instructions on use and make sure all the dirt has been removed before you move on to the conditioner. Leather conditioner puts back the softness into the shoes making them suppler and more comfortable to wear.  It can also make them look like new!

Some shoes can be washed.  The temperature of the water and whether the shoes must be hand washed or machine washed varies from shoe to shoe.

If your shoes are work shoes or hiking shoes then you will need to protect them from the elements with a spray protector.  These are easily bought from your shoe shop and will keep your shoes and feet dry as well as protecting the leather.  Clean your shoes first and if they need conditioning buy a protector with an added conditioner so you won't have to condition the shoe as well! It will save you time and money.  Some sprays will clean, condition and protect your shoes in one go.

If you have invested money in a pair of shoes then make sure you look after them.  If time is short then buy a cleanser that you can use in one application, just spray and go!
